Overview

SSH Pre-Authentication Rekey State Bypass in MikroTik RouterOS

RouterOS SSH enters the connection protocol after a client-requested rekey even though user authentication was never attempted, allowing an unauthenticated client to open a session channel and send an exec request.

On affected builds the server dispatches the command, enabling unauthenticated creation, overwrite, and reconstruction of files in the RouterOS managed file namespace, including support files containing configuration and diagnostic data. This issue was fixed in versions: 6.49.21 (Long-term), 7.23.4 (Long-term) and 7.24.2 (Stable)

AI Helps Uncover MikroTrick Attack Chain in MikroTik RouterOS

Security Affairs · 24 Sep 2026

MikroTrick chains two RouterOS flaws to bypass authentication and gain admin access. AI helped researchers uncover the attack chain within days. MikroTik pushed out patches on September 3, 2026 for several RouterOS issues at once, calling it an important security update without saying what it actually fixed. That silence was deliberate, and it didn’t last […]

MikroTrick Chain Let Attackers Take Over MikroTik Routers Without a Password or SSH Key

The Hacker News · 23 Sep 2026

Swati KhandelwalSep 23, 2026Vulnerability / Network Security Two MikroTik RouterOS SSH vulnerabilities chained together let attackers take full administrative control of Internet-exposed routers without a password, SSH key, or completed authentication. The chain, which CERT Polska calls MikroTrick, combines an SSH state-machine flaw (CVE-2026-67279) with an argument-injection bug in the RouterOS login process (CVE-2026-86060). Attack logs date to at least September 2, one day before MikroTik shipped patches in RouterOS 6.49.21, 7.23.4, and 7.24.2. As previously reported, CERT Polska...

MikroTrick: technical analysis, disclosure process, and the use of LLM agents

CERT Polska EN · 22 Sep 2026

We describe the technical details of the MikroTrick chain, which combines the CVE-2026-67279 and CVE-2026-86060 vulnerabilities and, when chained, allowed full takeover of a device without authentication. We explain the mechanics of the attacks observed in the wild, the coordinated disclosure of both vulnerabilities, and the practical role of LLM agents in the RouterOS research.
